Technology can improve education in many ways, including using computer games to teach different subjects, allowing access to educational materials, and providing better tools for learning.
Video Games:
First of all, games and apps can teach students about different subjects. Games like Assassin’s Creed can teach students about history and the Knights Templar. Any video games that involve a chat or inaudible communication can help improve typing and reading skills, which can allow students to research different subjects faster. Video games can also improve overall awareness. According to Science News for Students, “In the study, frequent game players between the ages of 18 and 23 were better at monitoring what was happening around them than those who didn’t play as often or didn’t play at all. They could keep track of more objects at a time. And they were faster at picking out objects from a cluttered environment.” (3). Finding certain items in a disorganized environment can help with rudimentary math skills, such as being able to pick out specific expressions in large algebraic equations. Action games such as Call of Duty or Fortnite have shown to increase the cognitive ability in those who play them.
Access To Online Material:
Also, technology allows access to more educational materials. Having online educational material may not seem like much, but it creates many new ways students can learn. There are countless websites that display every important event in history, which can encourage students to learn because they have an interest in the subject. Students can now just type in anything they want to know and they are provided with answers. They can go anywhere they want and still have access to an enormous amount of knowledge. Teachers can now post the homework and schoolwork online, so if students are absent or forget to write it down they can see what their assignments are. What’s more, is that teachers can post the material on their websites, so students don’t have to go to school the next day to get their work.
Better Tools For Learning
Lastly, technology gives students better tools for learning. For example, to better understand the surface area of an object, there are apps that unfold different shapes to show the sides that make them up. This can drastically change how well the student does in math. As explained before, search engines may be the best tools for learning. They allow for so much access to information relevant to the topic at hand, they are almost always used before writing anything in an English or History class. Currently, there are websites that have practice quizzes made by students that help them study for tests. The practice quizzes can be shared publicly to help other students study the same material. Other websites allow students to create flashcards that can be used for vocabulary related to a test. Other websites greatly expand student’s overall vocabulary across all subjects.
In conclusion, technology greatly helps today’s students learn and study.
