Technology: The Double-Edged Sword We Know So Well
Technology has a way of bringing us closer together and at the same time, keeping us farther apart. Look at the social media platforms. They give us the illusion that we are connecting, but, at the same time, we become so disconnected from the same source. Technology can bring us that dream job, the one that we have always wanted. At the same time, it can also take it away too, putting us in a position of having to search once more.
Technology is not necessarily a bad thing, in fact, it is a rather good thing. The trick is finding ways to make sure that we use it our advantage, not our disadvantage.
1) You need to own the technology you use. One way to do that is to get rid of any distractions you may have in front of you. Do what you need to do to get rid of the distractions. Keep a clean and clutter-free desk. Get rid of all notifications on your mobile device until the task is done. You can get rid of all other windows on your laptop that are not in use.
Everyone has their own ways of doing things. Technology will be an advantage to you as long as you remove all unwanted distractions.
2) There is a difference between being “busy” and being “productive.” You should not mistake the two. You should always try to keep things simple. Most of us cannot go from one project to another on a computer unless you have hidden talents the rest of us do not. Set one priority on your computer. Follow it through to completion. Pay no attention to the popup ads asking you to listen to the new Bruno Mars remix. You can listen to it later. You need to stay on task. Becoming distracted by the little things is one way in which technology can be considered a disadvantage.
3) It only takes a few things to keep us happy.
“It only takes about a half a dozen things to make a difference in our lives.”
Jim Rohn
Take a look at all the apps you have on your mobile app or desktop computer. What apps bring you the most joy? What apps do you need the most? Get rid of the others because they are just taking up space. This is what we call “decluttering your tech world.”
4) You can choose to learn about the technology you are using. One reason why so many view technology as a “disadvantage” is they do not know how to use it. Find ways to learn about the tools you already possess.
Some Final Thoughts to Leave You With
The technology on your computer is similar to using your brain or working out. You need to constantly work the muscle to get the results you want. You do need to workout 2-3 hours a day, contrary to popular opinion. You will burn yourself out that way. You need only 15 minutes a day or less to learn and use what you already have. Very similar thinking to technology and applying what you know. The more you use your technology muscle, the stronger it will become.
