The National Police Association knows that policing the streets of America is a tough business and police officers are an essential part of any thriving society. They constantly put themselves in harm’s way to ensure that law-abiding citizens live in a safe environment. However, some people take this for granted. They do not feel the need to appreciate police officers. This has led to some unprecedented challenges throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
The pandemic came with many challenges for everyone, with the government adopting strict measures to mitigate the spread of the virus and control its impact on the economy. Although it has done a great job bringing everything back to normal, you cannot ignore that it has had a substantial adverse effect on the general operations in our country
During this time, the government imposed budget cuts on some of the crucial bodies, and the police service happens to be one of them. Like any other body, the police service depends on sufficient funding to maximize its operations and guarantee safety for officers and citizens. The budget cuts imposed by the government presented a significant disruption to police operations forcing police departments from all over the country to seek alternative funding methods.
National Police Association Finds Jackson’s Gap, AL
Out of the need to continue providing quality service to residents, the Jackson’s Gap police department in Alabama reached out to the National Police Association to request funding. Due to budget limitations, the police department could not access critical equipment. This put them in a position where they could not fulfil their duties effectively.
Jackson’s Gap is a beautiful town and the home of Lake Martin and Camp ASCCA. In an area with so much to be admired, having an ineffective police department can hugely impact the local community. Thankfully, residents of Jacksons Gap do not have to worry about this. People from far and wide responded to their call for help and provided the funds to obtain critical equipment.
Benefits of Grants to Police Departments
Do not underestimate the importance of the police department. As mentioned earlier, the effective functioning of the police department depends on sufficient funding. There are many reasons why providing grants and donations to the police department is quite beneficial. Below are some of them.
1. Provides Training Support
In a generation full of police-involved violence cases, citizens continuously call for better officers’ training. However, most people fail to understand that this occurs since officers do not undergo sufficient training on how and when they should use their equipment.
Providing grants and donations to police departments allows them to access the required resources to ensure that they undergo proper training on critical elements such as de-escalation techniques and force continuum. Less training forces officers to depend on instinct instead of best practices with years of training and experience.
2. Limits Officer Retention and Recruitment
The lower the financial resources available, the fewer the police officers working on keeping our communities and neighborhoods safe. Additionally, limited funds strain the current officers and increase the chances of them quitting or performing their required duties effectively due to burnout. Many police departments across the country continue to record reductions in police department staff, and insufficient funding is one reason.
By providing donations and grants to local police departments, citizens can help get more officers on the streets. Having more officers means that they do not have to overwork. This contributes to satisfaction. Funding also allows them access to quality training and the best equipment to guarantee their safety in dangerous situations. When officers know that they can count on the equipment and training in life and death situations, they are more likely to commit to their jobs.
Adjuration
Rather than watching the police departments struggle and finding reasons to complain about the negatives, citizens should assist the National Police Association and all police officers in finding ways to improve the service provision of the police department. They can easily do this by providing donations to ensure that they have access to quality training and equipment. This is also an excellent way to get more police officers out on the street to guarantee the safety of our neighborhoods. Jackson’s Gap Police department should serve as an example of what we can achieve when we come together.
